Performed for six nights from 19-28 January 2023 at the Maltings Theatre, St Albans, Home, I’m Darling is all about the Martins who are living the dream. Judy is striving to be the perfect 1950s housewife with her husband, Johnny. She revels in the joys of domesticity; making cakes, fancy cocktails, and homemade marmalade.
And Johnny seems to have it all: an attentive wife, a beautiful home – and a promotion at work on its way. But behind the gingham curtains in Welwyn Garden City, things are starting to slowly unravel, and it becomes clear that being a stay-at-home woman of the house is not as easy as it seems.
Sylvia, Judy’s mother just cannot understand why her daughter wants to live a life that, in reality, required women to be subservient and Alex, cannot understand why Judy would think there’s “something” going on between her and Johnny. Outspoken Fran says it as it is and Marcus is not quite as nice as he seems.
Laura Wade’s award-winning comedy about sex, cake and the quest to be the perfect housewife certainly surprised and entertained our audiences and was almost a total sell-out.
Home, I’m Darling was first staged at The National Theatre in 2018, winning the Olivier Award for Best New Comedy and was nominated for the UK Theatre’s Best New Play.
This amateur production of Home, I’m Darling was presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals Ltd. on behalf of Samuel French Ltd.
